It can be generally agreed upon that The Joker(2019) was a phenomenal film that captured the hidden yet dark parts of our society. Joaquin Phoenix did a stellar job portraying the infamous character Arthur Fleck (also known as The Joker). The role is notably difficult. However Joaquin Phoenix proves is deep alignment and commitment to the character.
In an article from USA Today Brian Truitt details the challenges that come with Joker territory. He briefly reviews the men that have taken the role and transformed it. In fact, if you look at the original joker Cesar Romero in comparison to Joaquin Phoenix, you can visually see the differences between the two characters. On a deeper layer, the approach of each character is almost entirely opposite. This could be dialed down to the directional reference. However, given Joaquin Phoenix’ cited work ethic it becomes almost unquestionably evident that the difference in actor plays a huge role (no pun intended) in the execution of the Joker role.
One of the most notable traits of the Joker is his laugh. In this video from Atom Tickets, the laugh is reviewed throughout the years. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to an evaluation of the joker character.
Regardless of our thoughts on The Joker(2019) film, we cannot deny that the portrayal of Arthur Fleck is innately complex. The men who have carried the burden of The Joker, will always be known for their dedication to the craft.
